The service charge is collected by airlines from passengers passing through Nigerian airports, and remitted to FAAN.⁣

In a June 22, 2020 letter signed by the agency's managing director, Rabiu Yadudu, the old N1,000 charge for domestic flights will increase to N2000, while the $50 charge for international flights will increase to $100.⁣

According to a report by TheCable, Yadudu appealed to airlines in the letter to support the agency in the implementation of the review.⁣

He said the current rates, reviewed in 2011, are outdated, and that the new rates will help FAAN to improve and upgrade airports infrastructure.⁣

"This increase will afford FAAN the needed funds to upgrade our facilities to accommodate new airlines including the anticipated national carrier," he said.⁣

FAAN spokesperson, Henrietta Yakubu, told TheCable that the review is still a proposal, but Yadudu stated in his letter that it could become effective from August 1.⁣

He noted that the rates are premised on the approval given by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in a letter dated August 3, 2017.⁣

He said various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), have also been consulted since 2017.
