The immediate past governor of Imo State, His Excellency Owelle Rochas Okorocha has given some hints on how he was able to succeed in building numerous legacy infrastructures in Imo State during his time as governor, without having to borrow money from any financial institution.
The Imo West Senator who also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, explained that he ran a style of administration that is strange to most of Nigeria's present day political leaders, both at State and Federal levels.
Speaking during a live interactive session on radio, the billionaire philanthropist turned politician, revealed that he was able to reduce corruption in public service to a great extent during his time as governor and urged the current governor to continue in that line for the progress and prosperity of the State.
Explaining that the bane of leadership in Nigeria is the reluctance or total failure of public officials to be prudent in the management of public funds, Owelle revealed that he was able to save billions of Naira by closing up several conduit pipes through which government money was been stolen or allowed to waste. He said that his insistence on prudence in the management of public funds is responsible for his successes in infrastructure and human resources development.
According to him;
"I stopped corrupt politicians and top civil servants from dipping their hands into public till at the detriment of the ordinary masses, and this is what every responsible government should do."
Owelle, who is mostly described as 'The People's Senator and Leader', is rated as the best performing governor in the history of Imo State, and one of the best ever leaders to have come out of Nigeria, going by the numerous people oriented projects and policies he implemented during his time as governor.
