The body of maritime professionals in diaspora under the umbrella name of (NIMSID)Nigerian Maritime Society in diaspora received the news of the released crew-member of MV Charis who were illegally detained with great joy,The leadership of the organization also want to thanks everyone who had played a roll in securing their liberty,Our findings shows that those innocent crewmen unfortunately happened to be victims of circumstance,we will like to thank those who took the campaign for their freedom to the social space and made it go viral. We thank the Equatorial government ,the Nigerian Ambassador to Equatorial guinea.
We should recalled that ,the vessel MV Charis is a Nigerian flag ship with full Nigerians crewmen onboard
What we know is that the tugboat,(MV Charis) which was on its way to execute a vessel recovery contract in Equatorial Guinea when some armed assailants attacked it on May 5, 2019.
The vessel was commandeered by the attackers and used to attack the much larger Maltese-flagged vessel, MV Blue Marvin around the same area of the initial attack. A Spanish Navy ship in the area, however, came to ship’s rescue and stopped the attack while the assailants took to their heels.
Both MV Blue Marvin and MV Charis were handed over to the Equatorial Guinea Navy by the Spanish Navy, as the incident was clearly in their jurisdiction.
At this point, a misunderstanding of the specifics occurred between the arresting authorities because on arrival in Malabo, MV Blue Marvin was docked for repairs, with its crew treated decently, while MV Charis and its crew were detained by the police under threat of being charged with piracy, whereas they were equally attacked and hijacked by the pirates.
What is most important at this point is that, our seamen had returned home safe and sound and have since reunited with their families,
